Moving tips
Everything our crews wish customers knew beforehand
Most of the time saved on move day is earned in the two weeks before it. These are the habits that consistently shorten jobs and keep breakages at zero.
Four weeks out
- Book the crew and confirm the date in writing. Month-end Fridays go first.
- Start a 'do not move' pile: passports, medication, chargers, jewellery, hard drives.
- Photograph the back of your TV and desk before unplugging anything.
- Use up frozen food and cleaning products rather than trying to transport them.
Two weeks out
- Pack everything you won't use: books, off-season clothes, garage and shed contents.
- Redirect mail with NZ Post and update your address with the bank, IRD and insurer.
- Book lift access and loading bays if either address is an apartment.
- Arrange power, internet and water at the new address for the day before you arrive.
Packing technique
- Small cartons for heavy items, large cartons for light ones. Cap every carton at about 20kg.
- Plates travel on edge, not stacked flat — they resist pressure far better vertically.
- Fill every gap. Movement inside a carton, not the drop, is what breaks things.
- Label by destination room on two sides and the top, not by contents.
- Tape screws and fittings into a bag stuck to the underside of the furniture they came from.
Move day
- Clear a path from the front door to the truck and keep pets in one closed room.
- Keep a kettle, mugs, toilet paper, towels and a phone charger in one clearly marked box.
- Walk the crew through the house first and point out anything fragile or not going.
- Do a final check of the roof space, hot water cupboard, letterbox and clothesline.
